In a recent Court of Appeal case a farmer was found liable for having installed window glass rather than door glass in a back door he repaired. The door glass shattered and unfortunately a piece of the glass went into the eye of a young lady who was visiting the farm causing her to go blind in that eye.
The Court of Appeal held that if he had hired a Carpenter they would have known what standard of glass was to be installed in the door and the farmer should have had the same knowledge. This case followed an English precedent. Damages of €200,000 awarded.
So for those DIYers out there, if anything goes wrong, remember that the standard for your work is that of a professional craftsman.
